Rising Rent Kills White Street's Midtown Cafe

Midtown Cafe, which opened across from Western Connecticut State University in January 2010, closed because it couldn't afford the rent.

Midtown Cafe owner Jason Cancro of Danbury said business was good at the downtown eatery, but it wasn't good enough to survive the rising rent.

Cancro opened the restaurant in January 2010, and said the university was both a help and a hinderance to the business. When the school was open, staff and students ate in the restaurant. They crowded out other diners. When school was out, the other diners would re-discover the restaurant, Cancro said.

"It was a double-edged sword," Cancro said. His next venture will be in kitchen renovations supplying marble and granite through the family business, Stone Resources of Connecticut.
