Special 'EV Blanket' Helps Extinguish Complicated Car Fire In Danbury
Fire crews responded and found a Honda Hybrid on fire, and the highway was closed, officials said.

DANBURY, CT — The Danbury Fire Department responded to a reported car fire on I-84 near exit 5 westbound around 8 p.m. Friday.
Fire crews found a Honda Hybrid on fire, and the highway was closed.
"The highway was closed by the Connecticut State Police as firefighters utilized the "Carfire-EV" Protocol to contain and extinguish the fire," the Danbury Fire Department said in a post on Facebook. "As the flames were darkened down with copius amounts of water, firefighters then utilized the "EV Blanket" to contain and isolate the vehicle. The "EV Blanket" is a special fire resistant blanket, made up of a special fiberglass, which contains quartz, aluminum, magnesium, and silicon. The blanket is designed to contain an EV Fire as the nature of the fire from the burning batteries makes firefighting with water very challenging. The Danbury Fire Department invested in the EV blanket technology a few years ago, and then trained all personnel on EV and Hybrid fire tactics."
