WCSU will host a variety of plays, screenings, concerts and more throughout the month of December and January.

  • THROUGH DEC. 11 , EXHIBITION:Richard Klein: The Same Glass, Twice” will be on display from noon to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, in the Art Gallery of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the WCSU Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury.   • DEC. 1, SIGMA XI MEET AND GREET: Western’s Sigma Xi chapter officers will hold a Fall Semester Meet and Greet at 4 p.m. in Room 218 of the Science Building on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The event will provide the opportunity to meet chapter members and new officers, discuss member proposals for sponsoring events in 2016-17, and learn the policy on nominating WCSU students and faculty, as well as industry researchers, for associate or full membership. The meet and greet will be open to WCSU faculty, staff and students participating in any field of pure or applied sciences and math, as well as anyone engaged in research or commerce in a related industry.   • DEC. 1, FILM SCREENING: A screening of the documentary “Pray the Devil Back to Hell” will be at 5:30 p.m. in the Student Center Theater on the WCSU Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Funded by the Student Government Association, the screening aims to bring awareness about one of the Nobel Peace Prize laureates who will be on campus in February for Peace Jam.   • DEC. 1 & 2, ONE-ACT PLAYS: The WCSU Department of Theatre Arts will present 10-minute one-acts featuring plays directed by students, at 7 and 9 p.m. in the Studio Theatre of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury.   • DEC. 1, COFFEEHOUSE: WCSU will present the Midtown Coffeehouse at 8 p.m. in the Colonial Corner in the Student Center on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury.   • DEC. 2 & 3, PLAY THERAPY CONFERENCE: The WCSU Department of Education and Educational Psychology will host a two-day conference, “Using Play Therapy to Help Traumatized Children Heal,” from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Ballroom of the Campus Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury.   • DEC. 3, CLEP TESTING: The WCSU Testing Center will host a College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test at 9 a.m. in the Computer Center of the Campus Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. CLEP exams provide the opportunity to receive college credit for knowledge already acquired. The exam is open to the public.   • DEC. 3, PLANETARIUM SHOW AND TELESCOPE VIEWING: WCSU will host a 4 p.m. planetarium show, followed by telescope viewing of the sky from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Westside Observatory and Planetarium on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury.   • DEC. 3, BENEFIT CONCERT: The American Choral Directors Association and National Association for Music Education will host “Hungry for Music,” a benefit concert, at 6 p.m. in the Veronica Hagman Concert Hall in the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the WCSU Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. Hungry for Music is an organization that donates instruments to students who show a passion for learning, but cannot afford an instrument. The concert will feature members of the WCSU Department of Music performing a variety of musical genres. The event is free and the public is invited; donations are welcome at the door.   • DEC. 4, WCSU HOLIDAY JAZZ: The WCSU Jazz Orchestra, conducted by Jamie Begian, will present a throwback to the greatest holiday variety shows of the ’60s and ’70s at 3 p.m. in the Veronica Hagman Concert Hall of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. Featured will be arrangements ranging from Andy Williams’ “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” to “Sleighride,” and significant pop music of the era by composers Laura Nero and Jimmy Webb.   • DEC. 5, COMMUNITY POLICING PANEL DISCUSSION: A discussion about how citizens and police can work together to protect the liberties and lives of civilians and law enforcement officers, “Race, Community, Policing and YOU — A Conversation to Make a Difference,” will be at 11 a.m. in the Campus Center Ballroom on the WCSU Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. Participants will include Danbury Police Chief Patrick Ridenhour; Redding Police Chief Douglas Fuchs; Trooper 1st Class Kelly Grant, the public information officer for the Connecticut State Police; WCSU Police Chief Roger Connor; and student representatives.   • DEC. 8, FUNDRAISING EVENT: Western’s Delta Gamma Phi Sorority will host a fundraising event from 2 to 9 p.m. at Chipotle, 7 Backus Ave. in Danbury. Print and bring the flier, show it on a smartphone or tell the cashier you’re supporting the cause, and 50 percent of the proceeds will be donated to Delta Gamma Phi. The public is invited.   • DEC. 9, COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT CONNECT: Western Community Service Project Connect will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Bill Williams Gym in Berkshire Hall on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. This event is a one-stop housing and service fair that brings together more than 60 area agencies to provide immediate assistance to individuals who are homeless or in need of housing and social services assistance.   • DEC. 10, LOVE WINS CONCERT: The Love Wins Benefit Concert will be at 8 p.m. in the Veronica Hagman Concert Hall in the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the WCSU Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury.   • DEC. 13, YOGA MEDITATION SERIES: The Institute for Holistic Health Studies at WCSU will host a series of free meditation classes, “Sahaja Yoga Meditation,” at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month in Room 103 of Warner Hall on the WCSU Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Sahaja Yoga Meditation is a simple yet profound guided meditation with easy-to-do hand movements done while sitting in the comfort of a chair. Sahaja Yoga Meditation, founded by Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, is practiced in more than 100 countries. The purpose of this meditation is to awaken kundalini energy to create a state of thoughtless awareness. The benefits of this meditation include inner peace, happiness, clarity, improved focus, stress reduction, relaxation and improved physical health. The class will be conducted by Jesse Rovero.   • DEC. 15, HANCOCK STUDENT LEADERSHIP PUBLIC FORUM: The Hancock Student Leadership Program (HSLP) will showcase Hancock Student Leaders’ shadowing placements and the students’ readings on leadership at 5:30 p.m. in Room 102 of Warner Hall on the WCSU Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. HSLP students who will report on their experiences include Kyle Gaudet, Kristen Hinz, Kaitlyn LaBonte, Trevor Lyons, Molly Mathiew, Victor Namer and Kristy Trotta.   • JAN 13, SIP AND SKETCH: The WCSU Department of Art will host “Sip & Sketch” from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Drawing Studio on the second floor of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the university's Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. Enjoy a festive evening of drawing from a live model in a relaxed environment while you sample wine and assorted seasonal snacks. All skill levels are welcome, but you must be at least 21 to attend.   • JAN. 15, BRIDAL EXPO: A bridal expo, Wedding Steps Bridal Show, will be from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Feldman Arena of the O’Neill Center on the WCSU Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury.   • JAN. 26, EXHIBITION: “Women’s Work” will be on display from noon to 4 p.m., Monday through MAR. 12 Thursday and 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, through Sunday, March. 12, in the Art Gallery of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the WCSU Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. “Women’s Work” features the work of 12 female artists who have completed a residency at the Vermont Studio Center within the past few years. The exhibition features poetry and prose, painting, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media and installation art. Through these various forms, the artists embrace and challenge gender roles and stereotypes often associated with women’s work. The exhibition will be free and the public is invited.
