WSCU Shares March Calendar of Events

Western Connecticut State University invites the public to check out upcoming events hosted by the school.

MAR. 5 – 13 THEATRE PRODUCTION: The WCSU Department of Theatre Arts will present “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” in the MainStage Theatre of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. Performances will be at 8 p.m. on March 5, 11 and 12; with 2 p.m. matinees on March 6, 12 and 13. Set in the 1950’s

Mississippi Delta, this timeless Tennessee Williams story follows a Southern family in crisis and the relationships of two iconic characters, Big Daddy Pollitt and Maggie. MAR. 9 GUEST ARTIST LECTURE: Illustrator Ellen Weinstein will discuss her work at 11 a.m. in Room 144 of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the WCSU Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. MAR. 9 WELLNESS WEDNESDAY WORKSHOP: As part of the ongoing Wellness Wednesday program on campus, there will be an “Introduction to Herbalism” workshop at 12:30 p.m. in Room 127 of White Hall on the WCSU Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Community herbalist, flower essences practitioner and director of Twin Star Herbal Education Lupo Passero will lead the discussion. The workshop is sponsored by the HPX department and the Institute for Holistic Health Studies. It will be free and open to the public. MAR. 10 COFFEEHOUSE: WCSU will present the Midtown Coffeehouse at 8 p.m. in the Colonial Corner in the Student Center on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The coffeehouse will feature an open mic, followed by the featured act, WCSU student Ian Murray, at 9 p.m. Admission will be free and the public is invited. MAR. 12 ORGANIC FARMING CONFERENCE: The Connecticut Northeast Organic Farming Association will hold its Winter Conference from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the WCSU Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. For cost and other information, click here.

MAR. 12 CLEP TESTING: The WCSU Testing Center will host a College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test at 9 a.m. in the Computer Center of the Campus Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. CLEP exams provide the opportunity to receive college credit for knowledge already acquired. The exam is open to the public. MAR. 16 CULTURE AND VALUES LECTURE: Doctoral candidate Marcello Kilani, a Dean’s Fellow at The New School for Social Research, will discuss “The Good Life: Ethics and Identity in Ancient Greece” at 12:30 p.m. in the Student Center Theater on the WCSU Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Kilani is a passionate educator dedicated to bringing the cultures and ideas of the past to life in a way that bears on contemporary issues in philosophy, politics and society. He is the 2016 Macricostas Professor of Hellenic Studies at Western. The lecture, hosted by the WCSU Center for Culture and Values, will be free and the public is invited. It is funded by a grant from the foundation of Brookfield industrialist and philanthropist Constantine “Deno” Macricostas and his wife Marie. For more information, click here.

MAR. 16 CFO FORUM: The Ancell School of Business will present a CFO Forum at 7 p.m. in the Ballroom of the Campus Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. Scheduled to participate are CBIA Vice President and Economist Peter Gioia; Fairfield County 2015 CFO of the Year Jeff Gulbin, CFO of Finacity; Sean Smith, CFO of Photronics; and Ron Bruehlman, CFO of IMS Health. MAR. 16 SVPA OFFICE OF THE DEAN PRESENTS “CROSSING ARTISTIC DISCIPLINES”: WCSU School of Visual and Performing Arts Dean Jamie Begian will present “Adelka Polak and Justin Perlman - Crossing Artistic Disciplines: Performing the Visual” at 6 p.m. in Room 108 of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. Performance artist Polak and sculptor Perlman will present their work as individual artists and the intersection of their work together as collaborators. MAR. 24 HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS: The world-famous Harlem Globetrotters will display their usual fun and high-spirited showmanship during a game at 7 p.m. in the Feldman Arena at the O’Neill Center on the WCSU Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. MAR. 28 CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY WORKSHOP: The WCSU Department of World Languages and Literature will host a Chinese Calligraphy workshop at 9:30 a.m. in Warner Hall on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Calligraphy, the writing of characters, is an art that has developed over many centuries in China. Chinese language instructor Yan Toma will give students step-by-step instructions on how to write Chinese characters using a brush. Whether familiar with Chinese or not, learning Chinese calligraphy can be fun and inspiring. The class is open to anyone interested in this art. MAR. 30 RESEARCH SEMINAR: Adjunct Instructor of Biology Dr. Devdutta Deb will discuss “Understanding the Role of Anaerobic Nitrogen Respiration in Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Pathogenesis” at 4 p.m. in Room 219 of the Science Building on the WCSU Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Offered as part of the continuing “Research Seminar” series hosted by the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences, the event will be free and the public is invited. MAR. 31 – WESTERN SWIM ACADEMY: Public swimming lessons will be offered from 4:45 to 6:30

MAY 5 p.m. at the O’Neill Center Pool on the WCSU Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. Running for a five-week period, classes available will include: Toddlers, Water Exploration, Fundamentals of Swimming, Swimming Essentials, Swimming Proficiency, Advanced Swimming and Swim Team Training. The exhibition will be on display from noon to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, through Monday, April 11.
