Here are five outstanding nonprofit groups you should know about in the East Hampton-Portland area.

EAST HAMPTON/PORTLAND, CT — Nonprofit groups are keystone community organizations in the East Hampton-Portland area. Fortunately, there is no shortage of organizations to volunteer or get behind financially, and that need your help.

Here are five outstanding nonprofit groups you should know about in the East Hampton-Portland area:

  1. Connectict Draft Horse Rescue, East Hampton: This organization takes in draft horses that have been injured or abused, and retrns them to good health and helps find them loving homes.
  2. East Hampton Food Pantry: The East Hampton Food Pantry opened in 1989. The organization works closely with individuals and families to make sure no one in the community is hungry. Their primary location is in East Hampton, with additional operations at East Hampton High School and in Amagansett.
  3. East Hampton Social Services, Town of East Hampton: The mission of EHSS is to enhance the quality of life and foster the self-sufficiency of community members in need of economic and social support.
  4. Portland Animal Control: The goals of Portland Animal Control are to educate the public, find loving forever-homes for the animals that find their way to the shelter, and maintain a clean and healthy environment at the shelter.
  5. Portland Volunteer Fire Department: The Portland Fire Department was started in 1884. It consists of over 60 Active Volunteers responding to an average of 1,100 calls a year.
