Last week we published a story on crime in East Hampton and Portland compared with other towns of similar size. The total number of crimes reported for the two towns in that story differs from the totals here because the state data breaks out "simple assault" from its crime total statistics. We have included simple assaults here in the totals.

The first table breaks down the number of crimes by type. The second and third tables break down the most common crimes, larcenies and burglaries, by several variables including home burglaries and car break-ins.

The single murder in East Hampton occurred in February of 2011. Jaclyn Fitzgerald, 24, was found dead in her home on Namonee Trail on Feb. 25. Two days later the man who was named a "person of interest" in her death killed himself.
