East Hampton Restaurant Shut Down for Labor Citations

An East Hampton restaurant was shut down after the Connecticut Labor Department found that it was illegally hiring minors, according to a story originally reported by the Middletown Press.

Labor Department inspectors found that the owner of Hung Won Restaurant at 11 East High St., Jimmy Chan, had illegally hired minors without the necessary paperwork or workers’ compensation insurance. Five underage individuals were employed, department officials said.

Chan was “taking unfair advantage of his employees, the majority for whome this was their first on-the-job experience,” Labor Commissioner Sharon M Palmer told the Middletown Press.

The investigation originally came from a complaint by a parent of one of the underage workers, officials said.

The Labor Department closed the restaurant on Sept. 25, but inspectors said that Chan re-opened the following day. It was then shut down until Chan could show proof of property paying and documenting workers, officials said.
