Popular East Hampton Lake May Close for Safety Reasons
Officials say the blue green algae levels could be harmful to swimmers this Labor Day weekend.
One of East Hampton’s popular swimming spots may be closed this Labor Day weekend due to unsafe algae levels, Eyewitness News reports.
Lake Pocotopaug is showing signs of elevated blue green algae levels, prompting signs to be put up cautioning visitor to swim at their own risk.
East Hampton Town Manager Michael Maniscalco said the problem is caused by phosphorous that gets into the lake water via runoff, and that the main concern is skin irritation and other illnesses.

Maniscalco said it’s a problem every summer, and he has not received any complaints of sickness so far. The water’s algae level is currently being tested.
