Sewage Backup Cancels Classes, Activities At Portland High

The odor from the backup impacted the entire school complex, according to school officials.

PORTLAND, CT — Portland High School experienced a “significant” sewage backup on the first floor on Tuesday afternoon, school officials said.

The backup caused a foul odor throughout the school complex, according to an announcement.

The school district dismissed students early and cancelled after-school activities.

The Board of Education had been slated to meet tonight, but this was also cancelled, officials said.

“Our facilities team is working closely with the sewer department and outside contractors to address the issue and thoroughly sanitize the building,” the announcement said.

Administrators are hopeful the school will be able to reopen on Wednesday, but the damages and the remediation timeline were still being assessed as of Tuesday afternoon.
