Town Wants Pension Plan Changes so Reimondo, Other Temporary Workers, Don't Participate in Future

The Town Council will consider a proposal today to amend the town's pension plan so that temporary employees can not participate in it.

Right now the only temporary employee on the town's payroll is former police who retired Jan. 30 and was rehired within days to serve as the interim chief while the town searches for a replacement.

The pension plan amendments being sought by Town Manager Michael Maniscalco would be retroactive to Jan. 30 and would create a "class of ineligible temporary employees, specifies that no contributions will be made to the Plan by this group, and states that no hours of service performed or amounts earned as an ineligible temporary employee will be considered for purposes of the Plan," the town's attorney said in a memo summarizing the changes.

Basically, Maniscalco said, the amendments would bar Reimondo, or any temporary employee the town hires in the future, from participating in the municipal pension plan. The plan did not take into account the possibility of temporary employees when it was originally adopted.

One of the amendments also would bar any temporary employee from collecting pension payments related to previous employment by the town while also being paid for serving in a their temporary job.

Reimondo's rehiring has proven to be a thorny issue here in town with some complaining that the move violated the chief's separation agreement with the town. Maniscalco has said that rehiring the chief was legal and appropriate.
