BRANFORD, CT -Prominent Branford resident Al Carfora will soon be leaving his position on the Branford Board of Fire Commissioners in part to help his brother Joe, who recently was elected as mayor of neighboring East Haven.

Al Carfora has served as a fire commissioner in Branford for 18 years. His current term expires at the end of January.

At the most recent meeting of the commission, Al Carfora said between the time he is spending helping his brother and his basketball refereeing responsibilities, he has found it increasingly difficult to find the time to do other things.

Al Carfora said he made the decision to resign at the end of his current term because he was worried that he would not be able to devote the time necessary to the position.

Even though Al Carfora won’t be working in a paid capacity for East Haven or his brother he told his fellow commissioners he felt resigning was the right call.

He said he reached the decision to step down from his Fire Commission position “reluctantly,” calling the Branford Fire Department “the best Fire Department in the state.”

Branford Fire Chief Thomas Mahoney and the commissioners said they would miss Carfora’s input, but added they understood his commitment to his brother.

Al Carfora served as his brother’s campaign manager in Joseph Carfora’s successful mayoral run.

Al Carfora is also well known in Greater New Haven for his basketball legacy.

He was one of the best players ever at East Haven High School and Quinnipiac University.

Al Carfora is a member of the East Haven Hall of Fame, as well as the one at Quinnipiac. He also is a member of the New England Basketball Hall of Fame.
