EAST HAVEN, CT — Democratic Councilman and Mayoral Candidate Joseph Carfora is calling for a special meeting over the Town Council's decision Tuesday night to sell the DC Moore School to a private developer.

In a statement released to Patch, Carfora, who voted against the sale along with all the other Democratic members of the council said:

"Tuesday evening, the East Haven Town Council voted along party lines to sell DC Moore School to a developer, even in the face of overwhelming opposition.

"As has been documented in the past this property, both real, and personal, is riddled with mold and moisture," Carfora said. "As has been equally well-documented, the condition of this property was a factor that led the East Haven Board of Education to close the school."

Carfora continued: "I am calling upon my colleagues on the Town Council, on both sides of the aisle, to require as a term of sale, that the developer of the property hold the town harmless from any and all liability in the future arising out of these conditions."

"Any money to be gained from the sale of the property will pale in comparison to the town's future financial liability in the event that it is sued by a property owner for damage arising out of the well-known, well-documented condition of the DC Moore School," Carfora said.

"This is the most responsible, prudent course of action to take in order to best protect our taxpayers," Carfora continued. "I am therefore requesting a special meeting of the Town Council as soon as possible to take up this issue, and before there can be closing of the property."

The council Republicans, including GOP endorsed mayoral candidate Big Steve Tracey carried the motion to spend $410,000 to sell the land to developer Ralph Mauro, who has plans to build houses there.

Most of those in attendance at the meeting asked the council to not sell the property.
