At around 8:30 a.m. Friday, a mother duck with her many ducklings trailing behind crossed Hemingway Avenue, from Stop and Shop across to near Wells Fargo. But a witness who declined to share any more details with a reporter said two of the ducklings fell into the sewer grate.

Two East Haven Animal Control officers were able to rescue one and return it to the mother duck in a waterway behind the bank.

And then worked tirelessly but ultimately unsuccessfully, using their experience, and a duck whistle, to try to coax the baby duck from inside a drain pipe.

On hand were East Haven police, town public works supervisor Charles Coyle and other staff, as well as onlookers rooting for the ducklings.

An animal control officer was heard explaining that a mother duck may often have as many as a dozen ducklings or more, and the loss of one, however sad, is not uncommon.
