East Haven Police Chase, Then Arrest New Haven Man In Stolen Car

East Haven officials were that a man was driving an alleged stolen car and pulled him over after which a foot chase and capture ensued.

EAST HAVEN, CT - A New Haven man was arrested after an East Haven Police License Plate Reader alerted officers to a stolen car in the area.

On September 9, 2018 at 11:47 p.m. while on routine patrol, Officer Michael Juliano’s LPR equipped cruiser alerted him that a stolen car had just passed him. The vehicle in question, a 2000 Honda Civic was traveling eastbound on Main Street when the license plate reader hit on the plate.

After confirming the accuracy of the hit with dispatch, Officer Juliano initiated a motor vehicle stop on the vehicle in the area of Hemingway Avenue / Pennsylvania Avenue.

The operator, later identified as Angel Dejesus-Ortiz (D.O.B. 05/07/1999) initially stopped but fled as officers approached the vehicle. Dejesus-Ortiz sped up Pennsylvania Avenue with officers in pursuit of him, but struck a curb in the area of Tuttle Elementary School, 108 Prospect Road, which disabled the stolen vehicle. Dejesus-Ortiz exited the vehicle and fled towards the rear of Tuttle School.

Officer Juliano and Officer Joe Carangelo pursued Dejesus-Ortiz on foot over fences and through neighboring yards before they briefly lost sight of him. Dejesus-Ortiz was taken into custody shortly thereafter once responding officers saturated the area and found him walking up Thompson Avenue. Dejesus-Ortiz initially gave officers a false name but later admitted to providing them with false information.

· Larceny in the Third Degree, 53a-124

· Engaging Police in Pursuit, 14-223b

· Reckless Driving, 14-222a

· Reckless Endangerment in the First Degree, 53a-63

· Evading Responsibility, 14-224

· Criminal Impersonation, 53a-130

· Interfering with an Officer, 53a-167a

· Operating w/o License, 14-36a

· Criminal Trover, 53a-126

Dejesus-Ortiz was held on a $10,000.00 bond and faced a judge on 09/10/2018 at G.A. 23, 121 Elm Street, New Haven, CT.
