East Rock Monument Glows Orange for Hunger Awareness

September is Hunger Action Month - wear orange to help raise awareness of ongoing hunger in Connecticut communities.

East Rock Park’s Soldiers and Sailors Monument in New Haven is glowing orange once again this year in honor of Hunger Action Month, supported by the Citizens Bank Foundation, beginning Friday, August 30, through Friday, September 6.

Orange is the color of hunger relief and the lighting is to help raise awareness for the more than 520,000 people in Connecticut, including more than 157,000 children, who struggle with hunger.

“This is the second year the Soldiers and Sailors Monument will light up to help us to bring attention to the problem of hunger here in Connecticut,” said Nancy L. Carrington, Connecticut Food Bank’s president & CEO.  “With one of the New Haven skyline’s most recognizable structures lighting up orange this week, our hope is to engage more people to take action and help spread the word about how pervasive hunger is, right here in Connecticut.”

The monument lighting could not have been possible without the support of the City of New Haven’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Trees, and lighting equipment donations from Contemporary Lights in Stamford.
