EAST HAVEN, CT — A man who is suspected of a carjacking in New Haven struck two cars in East Haven, including a police car, before being arrested by East Haven police, police said in a news release Saturday.

Last Monday, New Haven Police Department sent out a broadcast to surrounding towns regarding a carjacking that had taken place earlier in the evening, police said. The stolen vehicle was described as a red Hyundai Elantra.

East Haven K-9 Officer Kevin McGuire saw a red Hyundai Elantra traveling westbound on South End Road (which borders the New Haven and East Haven town lines) without a visible license plate, police said.

By the time McGuire turned around and caught up to the vehicle, it had turned on to Stoddard Road and stopped in front of a residence briefly before departing again, police said.

McGuire attempted to stop the red Hyundai over, but the driver, Cyrus Biehl, 21, attempted to flee, even hitting McGuire’s vehicle in the process, police said. Biehl then drove up a private driveway and struck another parked vehicle before exiting and fleeing on foot, police said.

After a brief foot pursuit, Biehl was taken into custody. The New Haven Police Department arrived and confirmed the vehicle Biehl was driving was the same vehicle stolen earlier in the night during a forcible carjacking on South End Road, police said. The New Haven Police Department took possession of the stolen vehicle for further investigation.

Biehl, of Stoddard Road, East Haven, was placed under arrest and is charged with third-degree larceny, second-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree criminal mischief, interfering with an officer, and reckless driving.
