What Road in East Haven Needs a Speed Bump?

We asked Patch readers on Facebook what streets they thought needed a speed bump. Find out what your neighbors told us.

EAST HAVEN, CT - Over 9,000 fatalities occurred nationally during 2014 due to speeding according to the latest statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The data also shows a correlation between a driver’s age and the likelihood of a speed-related accident. As the age of a driver increases, their risk of being in an accident decreases. Men are also more likely to be at the wheel during a speeding accident, according to the study.

While the number of speed-related fatalities have continually decreased since 2005, speeding still remains an issue in many of our Patch communities, including East Haven. Readers suggested everything from increased police presence to more stop signs to building less housing to keep traffic at bay.

  • "Hill Street entering from Short Beach Road. It's like a speedway as they turn onto Hill Street without slowing down. My grandchildren live on Hill Street, and I am worried about their safety. I would love to see a speed bump there, before there is a tragedy."
  • "Well, it's quite apparent we have a speeding problem in town! My input is Forbes Pl! We could really deal with 3, but I won't be greedy, let's start with in front of my house."
  • "The corner of Dodge and Prospect Pl Ext. People blow that stop sign all day every day, which led to a serious accident of someone getting hit by a truck, as well as on Prospect Pl Ext. Kids play out there and people drive down the street so fast. Not even sure if speed bumps would even help these people that speed."
  • "Venice Place....between the dump trucks up and down it from 7 am - 5 pm in and out the Irish Club, and/or the heavy weekend traffic due to the Irish Club's activities. It's a dead end cul-de-sac and the kids can't even play in the street! By the way, there are no sidewalks either."
  • "Definitely Laurel Street. Those nice big speed bumps...and more patrols at stop signs, especially the 2 stop signs at end of a driveway. Jerks look at you like you have 3 heads, and they don't even slow down. It's an accident waiting to happen!"
  • "On most roads in Foxon the potholes are just as effective as speed bumps."
  • "Strong street everyone drives through it like it's the highway."
  • "Short Beach Road. Someone is going to die. People fly down that road doing 40-50 when the posted speed limit is 25."
  • "Silver Sands Rd could use a few!"
  • "Hemingway for sure, especially the last stretch to Main."
