Here are the top four stories today in Essex-Chester-Deep River:

  1. According to the state police, two individuals were hospitalized following a car crash in Essex on Saybrook Road early Monday morning. The vehicle reportedly crashed, then caught on fire around 1:51 a.m..One person was transported to the hospital via LifeStar, while the other was taken to the hospital by paramedics. (Torrington Register Citizen)
  2. It's almost time again, time for the annual acclaimed Chester Rotary Club's 4 on the 4th in downtown Chester. This year the iconic event is celebrating its 44th anniversary. Beginning as strictly a local run for avid runners, the event has become one of Chester Rotary’s most popular fundraisers. According to a recent Chester Rotary Facebook post, "in the beginning, keeping track of the runners and their time was by a paper notecard filled out at the start and handed to one of the volunteers as the runner crossed the finish line." My how times have changed! Now its all digital. The Post goes onto to give a grateful thanks to those who were instrumental in starting this Chester town tradition; "Bruce Watrous, Laurie Tomlinson, Richard Strauss, Leslie Strauss, Terry Schreiber, Jim Bairstow, Marion Bairstow, Peter Good, Jan Good and others for all your efforts in the early years of the race and making it so special. Thank you!" See you all at this year's race! (Facebook)
  3. Mark your calendars for area fireworks! Middletown will be holding a very special Fireworks Festival on Saturday, July 2, from 5 - 10 p.m. at Harbor Park. The festival showcase will present a dazzling fireworks display that is set off directly from a barge on the Connecticut River. There will also be live music, kids activities and food vendors. Fireworks will start at 9:30 p.m. (Middletown CT)
  4. Connecticut needs workers for the summer season! According to a CT Insider article,"in the second week of June, Connecticut hospitality and entertainment employers put out 700 new job ads on websites tracked by The Conference Board, a 70 percent increase from the prior week. With prices super-heated for gas and hotel rooms, some experts have speculated that Americans will be less likely to take getaways that are not already locked in place. That could keep employer demand for help high in Connecticut, as families spend some of the money on local venues and eateries. (CT Insider)
