Affordable Housing In The Tri-Towns

Your input counts!

CHESTER, CT — Chester to Develop Affordable Housing Plan. Your Input is Encouraged!

Connecticut is an expensive place to live and the lack of housing affordability in many communities means that young people may not be able to afford to live in the towns where they grew up, older residents may not be able to afford to downsize from single-family homes to an apartment in their community, and people employed in lower paying jobs can’t afford to live where they work.

Connecticut General Statutes (CGS) Section 8-30j requires municipalities to adopt an Affordable Housing Plan (AHP) by June 30, 2022 that specifies how they intend to grow affordable housing in their community. It is anticipated that the Town of Chester and all Connecticut towns will have AHPs that will address locally important issues while also aligning with larger regional goals.

The Lower Connecticut River Valley Council of Governments (RiverCOG) is developing a regional housing plan for Chester and other area towns that fulfills the requirements of CGS Section 8-30j for Affordable Housing Plans. The Regional Housing Plan will build upon the requirements of the statute and conduct a larger assessment of housing needs in the region. From this assessment the Regional Housing Plan will make recommendations for new and comprehensive approaches to meeting current and future housing needs. This effort will build on and help further the goals of the soon to be completed Regional Plan of Conservation and Development.

Residents are encouraged to learn more about housing in the Lower Connecticut River Valley and to share their input by taking a survey. More information and the link to the survey can be found here: https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/608c2f952b89495992f4228828e766ff
