Chester Conservation Commission Weekly Environmental Tip

Chester Conservation Commission will be giving away white pine and red oak seedlings.

CHESTER, CT — Environmental tip from the Chester Conservation Commission:

"To celebrate Earth Day (April 22) and Arbor Day (April 30), the Conservation Commission will be giving away white pine and red oak seedlings down town on Sat. April 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. So help the Land Trust pick up trash on that day, but also check out the seedlings. These are very different trees, but will add important native species to local yards.

White pines grow quickly, up to 2 ft. per year, and can reach 80 or more feet high with a 40 ft. spread, so they need space - not next to a building. They are welcoming hosts as nesting spots and cover for numerous birds, and their cones provide food for both birds and other native animals. Deer and cottontails browse their foliage, so some protection for young trees is helpful.
