Here are the top three stories in Essex-Chester-Deep River today:
- If you are local and you have driven past the former Deep River Farm stand recently, you may have noticed some hustle and bustle. What is being called, "The Ashlawn Outpost at Deep River Farms" is now officially open according to a Facebook post about the spot. The coffee establishment will reportedly be open from 7 a.m.-4p.m. daily. It will be closed on Mondays. Offering up a wide array of coffee choices, smoothies and more, the business will also be selling breakfast and lunch from the Ashlawn Kitchen. (Facebook)
- According to an article in cbs.news, the House Judiciary Committee today will consider eight pieces of gun control legislation that will be packaged together as the "Protecting Our Kids Act." It will move to the House floor for a vote next week. The article states, "The committee will first debate and modify the proposed legislation in a mark-up session before the full House votes. But any measure passed by the Democratic-led House would also need to get through the Senate, requiring 60 votes to advance and pass. The evenly divided Senate is highly unlikely to accept the sweeping changes most Democrats in the House want, which includes: raising the age for purchasing a semiautomatic centerfire rifle from 18 to 21 years old. Making it illegal to import, sell, manufacture, transfer or possess a large-capacity magazine, with some exceptions. (cbs.news)
- The town of Deep River's fiscal year budget for 2022-2023 has been adopted. The $19,076,304 budget, which is reportedly down 8.53 percent under the current fiscal year's budget, was approved at the annual town meeting and will go into effect on July 1. (Zip06)
