CHESTER, CT — Environmental tip from the Conservation Commission: Facts about Poison Ivy!
"Poison ivy is ubiquitous, and climate change is contributing to it growing more rampantly because more atmospheric carbon dioxide contributes to its faster growth. You should be aware that all parts of the vine, even the roots, can produce an itchy rash even when handled in the winter, when they are dormant.
However, there are some good sides to this itch-producing plant. Its extensive root system can keep erosion from happening on beachside sand dunes and its fat-rich white berries provide welcome food for birds and other small mammals. Indeed this is one way it is spread, as they spread the seeds after eating the berries. Finally, it is one plant we don’t want around, which is not an exotic invasive but a good old American one."
