Here are the top three stories today in Essex-Chester-Deep River:
- Valley Regional High School student Michael Kollmer is heading into his senior year knowing he will be one of the captains of the Warrior's lacrosse team. This is quite a feat since he just started playing the complicated and competitive sport his sophomore year, on the recommendation of a friend. Kollmer's first athletic passion is soccer, however. According to a Zip06 article, "in only his second season playing lacrosse, Kollmer solidified a spot on the All-Shoreline Conference Team for his performance as a midfielder with the Warriors this spring." Congratulations Michael, good luck next season! (Zip06)
- Hoping to encourage more people to use alternate transportation like bicycles, Deep River book store owner Colin Bennett offers a free bike repair station at his store. According to the Middletown Press article, "The simple structure has a rack to hold a bicycle, attached tools for common repairs and air pump. Accessible during daylight hours outside of the bookstore at 171 Main St. The project came to fruition through community support. Tools were donated by companies such as Airline Cycles in Colchester, and help from Wayward Woods in Haddam, as well as advice from Essex Hardware. In the future, the bookseller is hoping to create a bicycle collective to teach riders how to make simple fixes and other useful skills." (Middletown Press)
- Join the Essex Land Trust for a kayak adventure on Saturday, July 9 at 9 a.m. around Nott Island Middle Cove. Avid kayaker and Essex Land Trust Board President Jeff Croyle will lead a circumnavigation of Nott Island. The island is on the Connecticut River, owned by the state, and is located across from the Essex Harbor. The plan is to stop on the island for a refreshment break. Please arrive early to sign a waiver and launch your kayak/canoe for a timely departure. A safety boat will accompany. Launch at Middle Cove, Essex Main Street Park, 12 Main Street. Hope to see you there!(Facebook)
