How To Prepare For Hurricane Henri

A message from the town of Essex has important information on how to prepare for Hurricane Henri.

ESSEX, CT — An e-mail was sent out from the town of Essex stating the following:

"Hurricane Henri is expected to make landfall in our area and will have a SEVERE impact beginning early Sunday. The storm will cause flooding, downed trees and downed wires which will make many roads IMPASSABLE. Your street or your driveway may be blocked preventing you from leaving your home, getting to a family member, or going a to shelter. PREPARE for widespread power outages to last 5-10 days. FINISH your storm preparation by Saturday night. Do not ride out this storm alone. Check on your neighbors, family and friends.

  • 5-10 days of non-perishable food and shelf-stable juice & milk; water (1 gallon/person/day); snacks, baby food, manual can opener
  • Medication, First Aid kit, sufficient supply of medical equipment such as oxygen tanks, diapers and baby supplies
  • Charge all electronic devices; install new batteries in flashlights; fuel for generators, gas grills & cars
  • Insurance policy, important papers & bank accounts; Extra cash on hand
  • Pet food, leash, collar, crate for transportation, pet litter, bedding, vaccination records & Vet information
  • Bring in outdoor objects such as garbage cans, lawn furniture, toys
  • Plan an inland evacuation route in case you must leave home; notify family and neighbors of your evacuation plan
  • Know the location of storm shelters
  • Fill your bathtub with water, unless you have little children. This water can be used for drinking, washing, and flushing the toilet.

If there are downed wires in your area do NOT touch or go near them. Assume the lines are energized and stay as far away as you can, as they can cause severe injury.
