DEEP RIVER, CT β€” At a recent Deep River Board of Selectmen Meeting First Selectman AngusMcDonald spoke about the establishment of a Recovery Committee concerning the utilization of the ARPA (American Rescue Plans Act) funds.

It was discussed that the Committee would be comprised of volunteers focused on Public Health/Safety and Welfare, Economic Recovery/Development and Arts/Culture. The purpose of the Committee is to study what the Town can utilize the ARPA funds for and how best to move forward with the allocation of said funds in the three areas allowed.

McDonald is seeking to have a representative from Planning & Zoning, Economic Development, Sustainability as well as residents join the Committee to determine how best to help businesses recover or expand and to encourage other businesses to open. The other area the funds can be spent on is Arts and Culture. McDonald believes expanding the Arts/Culture in the community can enhance the future economic development and quality of life in town.

Deep River will receive two installments of ARPA funds; each in the amount of approximately $650,000. The Town has received the first installment and will receive the second installment next year. The Town has four years to allocate the funds.

McDonald said he hopes to see the expansion of social services; whether the Town is allowed to use the funds to increase the social service director’s hours or employ an additional employee in the social services department. In addition, he felt that it would be beneficial to the Town to purchase bodycams for the police and radio cams for the emergency services; however, at this time, more research is needed to determine if the funds can be used for these purchases and expenses.
