  1. Who's going to win? You'll have to come out to see! The Tom Parrish Memorial Softball Tournament is being held this weekend, Aug. 19-20 at Devitt Field. Games will begin at 8 a.m. on both days. The Deep River Fire Department will be playing against the Chester Hose Company in one of the games. Come cheer on your favorite team and help to raise money for Valley Regional High School scholarships. (Deep River Fire Department via Facebook)
  2. Visit the Essex Library during the month of September to see the Richard Spearrin: Photography Exhibition. According to a press release from the Essex Library, "Spearrin is ever ready to capture the people, places, and creatures that present themselves to his trained eye. Spearrin creates images that inspire admiration and gratitude for the beauty available in the moment. A member of the Connecticut Valley Camera Club Steering Committee, he arranges photoshoots for the camera club and mentors beginning photographers. He exhibits at area venues, and his photographs have been used in local magazines, as well as a Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) publication." (Essex Library)
  3. Spectrum Gallery in Centerbrook is currently looking for images in all mediums including photography, painting, mixed media, printmaking and sculpture for its upcoming Fall into Fall exhibit. From my notebook:

  • Town of Essex – Government: "Be a Mindful Pet Owner. You may love your pet and everything they do β€” but that doesn’t mean everyone else does, too. A good neighbor is a responsible pet owner who keeps their pets in check. Taking your dog for a walk throughout the neighborhood is a great way to meet people, but make sure to keep them on a leash, clean up their messes and deposit the bags in your own trash can β€” not your neighbors." (Town of Essex – Government via Facebook)
  • Ivoryton Library Association: "We look forward to celebrating with you! Kindly RSVP before Monday the 21st in order to reserve a special surprise for your children! All family members are welcome!" (Ivoryton Library Association via Facebook)
  • Essex Library: "Stay & Play, a weekly Wednesday play group, starts Sept. 6! Our children's area has trains, toys, blocks, puzzles, and more for children of all ages to expand their curiosity and try new things!" (Essex Library via Facebook)
