  1. Don't be scared if the water in the Connecticut River turns red. It's not the end of the world! According to NBC Connecticut, The USACE's New England District said the Engineer Research and Development Center will [be] apply a tracer dye, called rhodamine, beginning this month at multiple sites along the river." Reportedly, the dye may turn the water red. The sites the dye will be applied to over the next few months are Keeney Cove in Glastonbury, Chapman Pond in East Haddam, Chest Boat Basin in Chester and Selden Cove in Lyme. The reason the dye is being applied is to better study the invasive aquatic plant, hydrilla. (NBC Connecticut)
  2. February weather is affecting this year's summer peach crop now in Connecticut. Reportedly, a cold snap last February caused a large portion of the peach buds throughout the state to freeze, resulting in a less than stellar peach season this year. One farmer in Glastonbury had so many crops damaged, it will not be offering its regular pick your own peaches this year at all. (NBC Connecticut)
  3. Mark your calendars now for the arrival of the lobsters in Chester on Sept. 9, for the Rotary Club of Chester's 52nd annual Lobster Festival. Take part in the annual celebration of friends and family while enjoying live music and a delicious meal. Stay tuned form more information regarding tickets, times and location. Wednesday, August 2

  • Chris Marra from the Leaf Jumpers on the Library Lawn (6:00 PM)

From my notebook:

  • Town of Essex – Government: "Incandescent Bulbs: How to dispose of them? Incandescent bulbs include traditional screw-in line bulbs, and come in various sizes and shapes (e.g., round bulbs, and cone-shaped flood and spotlights). They include traditional tungsten-element light bulbs, as well as the newer halogen lamps. All of these types of bulbs may be disposed of in the REGULAR TRASH. If you use these lamps, though, you should consider switching over to fluorescent bulbs since they can provide dramatic energy savings, which in return reduces air pollution emissions from electrical generation plants." (Town of Essex – Government via Facebook)
  • Essex Library: "CareerConneCT provides FREE training for high-demand careers. Earn the skills needed for a job in 4 to 24 weeks, work with a career coach, and get connected to employers that are ready to hire! Find out more at portal.ct.gov/careerconnect" (Essex Library via Facebook)
  • Tri-Town Youth Services Bureau: "This looks like a great one ya'll! Tonight, at the Deep River Public Library Lawn, bring a blanket, some chairs, and a picnic dinner!" (Tri-Town Youth Services Bureau via Facebook)

Now you're in the loop and ready to head out the door on this Wednesday. See you all tomorrow morning for another update!
