Keep Organic Garbage Out Of The Waste Stream

News about food scrap waste.

CHESTER, CT — An environmental tip from the Chester Conservation Commission:

"US grocery stores throw away about 3.5 million tons of food a year, and this does not include what consumers throw away. With the imminent closing of MIRA (Materials Innovation and Recycling Authority)by July 1 in Hartford’s South Meadows, Chester residents should be thinking about how to keep their organic garbage out of the “throw away” waste stream which currently goes to MIRA. Grocery stores are trying a number of solutions (see future enviro tips), so we need to do the same. Several CT. towns, Meriden being the most recent are experimenting with two programs to collect and recycle food scrap waste from their households and restaurants. Masonicare at Chester is doing the same thing. Keep a lookout for more information on these programs and what you can do to help."
