Here are the top three stories today in Essex-Chester-Deep River:

  1. Come join the Deep River Public Library for a very special Open House on June 23 at 6 p.m. There will be light refreshments and an awards ceremony. Hope to see you there! (Deep River Public Library via Facebook)
  2. The Essex Town's Traffic Authority has unveiled the new stop sign at the intersection of Main Street and Summit Street near the Ivoryton Playhouse. This intersection is now officially a three-way stop. The hope is that this new sign will increase the safety in the area, reducing speeds and making it safer for pedestrians. The Resident State Trooper's Office reminds motorists to come to a full and complete stop at or before the painted white stop lines and only proceed ahead when safe to do so. Police will be enforcing the new stop sign immediately. (Essex Fire Engine Co. #1 via Facebook)
  3. Get ready for a new show debut at the Ivoryton Playhouse on June 30. The Playhouse will be featuring “Smokey Joe’s Café: The Songs of Leiber and Stoller.” This Grammy Award-winning and Tony-nominated “smash” made history as Broadway’s longest-running musical revue. Don't miss this one! (Trumbull Times)

From my notebook:

  • Town of Essex – Government: "Hi, I'm Minnie, a female, Petite Pitbull staying up at the shelter in Essex and I'm hoping for a forever home soon. I am super hyper when you first meet me and a bit mouthy, but Officer Carroll says I'm getting better each day and with a little training I'll learn not to be such a handful. I would need an owner who has lots of energy to manage me until I get it all together." (Town of Essex – Government via Facebook)
  • Deep River Farms: "Stop by Deep River Farms Farmstand for fresh-picked organic garlic scapes. $4 a bundle. A garlic scape is the flower stalk of a garlic plant. It tastes like garlic, only more complex and slightly spicier." (Deep River Farms via Facebook)
  • Rotary Club of Chester: "Beginning as a strictly local event for avid runners, the 4 on the 4th has become one of Chester Rotary’s most popular fundraisers." (Rotary Club of Chester, CT via Facebook)
  • Deep River Public Library: "We started off our summer programs dishing up these tasty treats! Thanks to all the adults, teens and families that joined us for lemon blueberry pop tarts!" (Deep River Public Library via Facebook)
  • Essex Library: "Our last teen TGIF until next school year is coming up! For teens in Grades 7-12. Come to the Essex library Friday, June 24 @ 3:30. We have Super Smash, games, snacks, candy and more! Can't wait to see you!" (Essex Library via Facebook)
  • Essex Fire Engine Co. #1: "Bike rodeo, Sunday June 26 at the Ivoryton Green." (Essex Fire Engine Co. #1 via Facebook)
