Here are the top three stories today in Essex-Chester-Deep River:
- According to a recent press release, in response to a hateful and despicable public act in Deep River, Valley Regional High School Students, in conjunction with the JEDI Center, are taking a stand, with a rally against racism today, at 6:30 p.m. at the Deep River Town Hall. This is a family-friendly event with plenty of room for social distancing. All are welcome to join. “As young people it is important to take initiative to foster acceptance in our community and ensure a brighter future,” Elizabeth Allen, a junior at Valley said in the release. - It was a picture-perfect almost summer day in the Nutmeg State Saturday and residents were out in droves enjoying the beautiful weather as well as the public parks throughout the state. So much so that several area parks had to close to visitors because they were at full capacity. For example, around 4:15 p.m., Wadsworth Falls State Park in Middletown had to close because its parking lot was full to capacity, according to a state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection tweet. Around 3:15 p.m., Gillette Castle State Park in East Haddam reported it was sold out for the day for tours of the castle, DEEP said, also stating the park was still open until sunset. (Patch)
- The tax collector in the town of Essex is encouraging everyone to pay online, by credit card or by mailing in their payment. There is reportedly a green drop-off mailbox in the Town Hall parking lot, which is checked daily. According to a post on the Town of Essex Facebook page, enclosed in residents' tax bills there will be envelopes for your convenience. If you would like a receipt, enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope and the taxpayer portion of your bill. The first installment of town tax for real estate, personal property and motor vehicle taxes will be due on July 1. Supplemental motor vehicle taxes will be due January 1 by any person who owns a motor vehicle which was registered after the first day of October and registered before the first day of August 2023.
