Ticks, Ticks and More Ticks!
There are several new ticks in the Northeast, some of which carry a host of unwanted diseases.
CHESTER, CT — Environmental tip from the Chester Conservation Commission: A consequence of climate change in CT and Chester you might not have thought of is the spread north of several new tick species which carry nasty diseases. Some, like the lone star tick, have been found in Fairfield County for several years, but the reported sightings have risen and moved north. A new arrival is the Asian long-horned tick which can transmit diseases to both animals and people. We are all familiar with the deer tick or black legged tick which transmits Lyme disease, but did you know that it is active any time the temp is above freezing. If you find a tick, it should be reported; see the web-site for the Connecticut Agriculture Station for directions on how to do this, as well as, all sorts of other helpful information.
