This Week The Tri-Towns Celebrate Earth Day

Thursday, April 22, 2021, is the 51st anniversary of Earth Day!

ESSEX, CHESTER, DEEP RIVER, CT — Bringing global, environmental awareness to the forefront and creating positive action for the sustainability and preservation of our planet, Earth Day was given birth to in 1970. Now, some 51 years later, in the midst of a global pandemic, on Thursday, April 22, 2o21 a worldwide celebration of public consciousness about the state of the earth and our environment will be observed.

Thinking globally and acting locally the tri-towns will observe and celebrate this important worldwide holiday in a variety of ways:

In Essex, the Connecticut River Museum, whose website states that they celebrate Earth Day every day, will be offering its Hands on the Land Exhibit, which has been generously funded by the Rockfall Foundation. The exhibit proudly displays the video, “Invading the Connecticut River- The Spread of Hydrilla” courtesy of CT Resource Conservation and Development (CT RC&D). Created and written by CT RC&D staff, Jeanne Davies and filmed by Emily DeLuca of Crosscourt Media.

In Chester, The Chester Land Trust, in conjunction with the town, is teaming up for a town-wide beautification clean-up effort on Saturday, April 24th. Volunteers are asked to meet at the town-owned parking lot, on Water Street in Chester at 9 a.m.

Attendees and volunteers are asked to wear sturdy comfortable shoes, bring and use protective gloves, and a bright-colored outer garment for recognition while helping pick up litter on the street sides in town. If anyone has a "pick-stick" (A stick with a nail protruding from the end) you may bring it along to help in securing individual litter items. Large plastic bags will be provided for trash. The bags of litter will be picked up by the town Department of Public Works following the event.

"Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's need, but not every man's greed."—Mohandas K. Gandhi (1869-1948), quoted in EF Schumacher, Small is Beautiful.
