Here are the top three stories today in Essex-Chester-Deep River:

  1. Mark your calendars for Saturday night! Chester Fair Wine and Beer Tasting Event is back from 6:30 to 9 30 p.m. at the Chester Fair Grounds. Tickets are available at the door. $25 includes entrance and a tasting glass. Food will be available for sale, (bring cash). Music will be John Martorelli. All proceeds support The Chester Fair Education Fund. So, come out have fun and enjoy a beautiful summer evening in Chester. (Facebook)
  2. Do you know about the Betty Pierson Shed located at the Essex Transfer Station? According to a Facebook post about the building, it is an area that provides a drop-off location for reusable items that residents want to offer to their neighbors. Wooden furniture, household items, bicycles, etc., in good condition, may be left here. Residents may take items for their personal use. Don't toss things into the garbage that someone else might be able to use! Remember, "one man's trash is another man's treasure!"(Town of Essex Via Facebook)
  3. Black bears are sighted quite often this time of year throughout most parts of Connecticut, but when they start breaking into people's homes, it's time to call in the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. According to DEEP officials, a bear with "no signs of fear or wariness of people" was euthanized after breaking into a Canton home and trying to enter another on Tuesday morning. The bear reportedly first tried to get into a home through the front door and a window. It was undeterred when the homeowner tried to scare it away DEEP officials said in a news release. Three hours later, the bear broke into a house about 400 yards from the first home. The decision to euthanize the bear was made based on DEEP guidelines for a bear that has entered or tried to enter homes, has shown no signs of fear or aversion to humans and poses a threat to the public's safety, officials said.
