The second annual MADD Dry 5K and 2-Mile Walk will take place this Sunday at 9:00 AM at Fairfield University’s Leslie C. Quick Jr. Recreational Complex. The event offers participants an opportunity to kickstart the new year in a meaningful way with health and wellness in mind. It aligns with Mothers Against Drunk Driving's (MADD) mission of Impaired Driving Ends Here® by encouraging new personal goals and participation in Dry January.

Over 200 participants are expected, with the event anticipated to raise thousands for MADD Connecticut. Highlighting the community's commitment to the cause, the Fairfield University Women’s Basketball team will be volunteering at the event to show their support. They won 28 games between November of last year and their elimination from the NCAA tournament this past March. This year’s team is currently at 9-3 and undefeated in conference play.

The morning begins with packet pick-up and registration at 7:30 AM, followed by the 5K race and 2-Mile Walk at 9:00 AM. Participants will receive a branded long-sleeve tech shirt as a token of appreciation for spreading MADD’s mission of preventing tragedies caused by impaired driving. After the race, participants can enjoy grab-and-go snacks and refreshments before the 10:00 AM awards ceremony, where top finishers across age categories will be recognized.

John Bysiewicz, owner of JB Sports Event Management and race coordinator, brings a deeply personal connection to the MADD Dry 5K. Having gone through his own tragedy after being struck by an impaired driver, Bysiewicz is channeling his experience into raising awareness about drunk driving through coordinating this meaningful event.

“MADD and this event truly mean a lot to me,” said Bysiewicz. “Having witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of drunk driving on individuals and their families, I’m committed to helping prevent others from going through the same pain.”

To further the mission, Bysiewicz has launched a fundraising page on jbsports.com, encouraging participants to donate the amount they might typically spend on alcohol during January.

Drunk driving remains a critical issue in Connecticut, with over 100 fatalities and thousands of crashes annually. The MADD Dry 5K provides a platform for the community to take meaningful action against this preventable issue.
