A Variety of the Collectible and Practical Available at Farms Village Antiques

In its idyllic setting in West Simsbury, Farms Village Antiques offers products that include practical kitchen items, collectible books, furniture, knick knacks for every taste, beautiful cobalt glass and more.

"I just think there's a wide selection of items here — new and old," said antiques dealer Penny Mahar of Canton.

Mahar is one of 9 dealers that co-run the store on Farms Village Road in West Simsbury.

The shop is a true co-op. The rent is split and each dealer has a booth and takes one three and a half-hour shift per week. Bookkeeping is old school. Stickers denote who owns an item and purchases — cash or check — are tallied on paper.

Every dealer also has different tastes, resulting in a good variety of offerings, she added.

Many of the dealers appreciate the chance to sell (and buy) items without the huge time commitment. They also meet periodically and occasional all enjoy an evening out together.

“There are enough dealers that it’s not overbearing,” Mahar said. “We all work together in every aspect."

For Mahar the setting is an advantage too. Located on the Tulmeadow Farm property, there’s scenic fields, bales of hay, farm animals, fields and looming mountains.

“The setting is great here,” Mahar said.

The shop is located in a historic building that was once a post office and has seen many uses over the years  Before his untimely death in 2004 at age 49, Gilbert "Gibby'' Pitcairn managed Gibby's Sugarloaf Mountain Antiques or “Gibby’s” for more than 12 years, according to his obituary.

“We decided to keep it going,” said Eileen Perry, another dealer.

While the past few years have been a little lean, Mahar said the store has numerous faithful customers who come back often.

And recently Mahar has seen a greater influx of customers, including young people.

“We’ve held on because we all enjoy it,” Mahar said.
