East Granby Budgets Squeaks by on 4-Vote Margin; Recount Required

On May 7, four voters made the difference in rejecting a proposed East Granby budget. On Wednesday, four voters made the difference in passing one.

Though a recount will be required because the difference in votes is less than half of 1 percent, First Selectman Jim Hayden said it appeared that the budget had passed.

Hayden said a total of 1332 voters came to the polls, slightly higher than for the first referendum. A total of 667 voters said yes to the budget — which included a $50,000 trim to the school district from the first proposal — and a total of 663 voters said no. Two ballots were left blank.

“In your opinion is the General Government Budget in the amount of $4,344,540 an increase of 3.0% for Fiscal Year 2013/2014, the right amount, too low or too high?

“In your opinion is the Board of Education Budget in the amount of $14,671,000 an increase of 4.5% for Fiscal year 2013/2014 the right amount, too low or too high? 

Right amount 236 / too low 364 / too high 705 with 27 blank ballots
