East Granby Town Meeting Quickly Approves Almost $100K In Capital Requests
A very short town meeting in East Granby officially approved the appropriation of funds for five capital projects previously approved at the town's budget referendum in

A quick town meeting Thursday night at the East Granby Town Hall saw the approval of funds for five capital projects, ranging from extending the life of one of the town’s dump trucks to down spout and drain repairs at Allgrove Elementary School.
The five measures unanimously approved by the small group of about 10 meeting attendees were: replacing the body of a town dump truck at $25,000; the first installment of funds for a real estate and personal property revaluation required by the state at $35,000; the repair of down spouts, roof patches and drains at Allgrove Elementary School at $15,000; and finally, a combined measure (technically representing two capital requests) from the boards of selectmen and education for assessing the Municipal Inter-local Risk Management Agency’s (MIRMA) workman’s compensation insurance assessment at $22,700. The total cost of the capital projects was $97,700.
The new truck body will extend the life of a 1999 Sterling dump truck by approximately 15 years and save thousands of dollars as compared to the other option of purchasing a new truck. The state-mandated revaluation is covered in more detail here. The funds allocated for the MIRMA’s workman’s compensation insurance will allow the town to better assess that plan. The school repairs will improve Allgrove’s structural integrity and increase the building’s overall quality.

The East Granby Board of Finance had previously recommended the requests for a vote at the town meeting. The funds themselves were previously approved at a May referendum as part of the town’s overall budget. However, the five capital projects needed specific approval for appropriation at town meeting before the funds could be used.
East Granby’s legislative body is the town meeting. Such meetings are held throughout each fiscal year to approve individual capital projects proposed by town boards, presented to the board of finance and then suggested by that board for a vote at town meetings held throughout the year
