Photo Gallery: Granby's Lost Acres Fire Department Demonstrates Live Firefighting Techniques

Granby's volunteer firefighters educated kids and adults about fire safety and performed some exciting and informative demonstrations at the Lost Acres Fire Department central station Saturday.

The Lost Acres Fire Department, Granby's all-volunteer firefighting service, featured a controlled burn, a vehicle extraction demonstration, open trucks, information, food and fun at its yearly open house Saturday.

Look through the photos above for an up close and personal view of the firefighters extinguishing a controlled fire, the result of the vehicle extraction demonstration, new and antique fire trucks and more.

The controlled burn demonstrated how quickly a fire escalates, with a single couch ignited with a small flame becoming a raging fire radiating intense heat and producing billowing clouds of thick smoke in no more than three minutes.

Besides demonstrating how quickly fires can spread, the Lost Acres firefighters showed attendees the proper procedure for extinguishing a fire and demonstrated the effectiveness and life-saving value of smoke detectors. The detector attached inside the controlled burn structure went off as the first few wisps of smoke rose from the ignited couch, proving that smoke detectors are an invaluable and necessary part of any home, business or other structure.
