Former Estate Of Renowned Abstract Painter Sold In Greenwich
Robert Motherwell, considered to be the founder of abstract expressionism, lived and worked at the property for 21 years.

GREENWICH, CT — The former Greenwich estate of Robert Motherwell, an artist who is considered one of the founders of abstract expressionism, has sold for $2.5 million, according to a news release from Christie's International Real Estate Group.
The real estate group's Westchester-Hudson Valley brokerage completed the sale, which represented a 28 percent increase from the original listing price of $1.95 million. The home is located at 909 North St., and was sold after just two months on the market, a news release on the sale noted.
The 13,312-square-foot home sits on an expansive four-acre property and features 10 bedrooms and six bathrooms, the listing description on Compass said. The landscape was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, who co-designed Central Park in New York City. Compass of Greenwich represented the buyer in the sale.

Motherwell showcased his work extensively in both the United States and Europe, and in 1965, he achieved the distinction of being among the inaugural artists of his era to have a retrospective exhibition hosted by the Museum of Modern Art, a news release said.
After moving to Greenwich in 1970, Motherwell constructed separate studio spaces, including a large painting studio and separate studios for his work on collages and printmaking, according to the Dedalus Foundation, which Motherwell founded in 1981 to promote public comprehension and admiration of modern art principles.
The foundation continues to honor its mission through initiatives such as scholarships, publications, exhibitions, research endeavors, and beyond.
"The great American artist Robert Motherwell lived and worked at this property during one of the most productive periods of his career, from 1970-1991," said Dedalus Foundation President and CEO Jack Flam, in a news release.
"Motherwell loved the way the house and grounds presented a graceful equilibrium between the natural world and the ordered aesthetics of landscape architecture, creating the kind of balance between nature and culture that is characteristic of much of his own work. He also treasured the way in which the property ensured complete privacy but was also located conveniently close to both downtown Greenwich and New York City," Flam said.
Motherwell died in Provincetown, Mass., on July 16, 1991, at the age of 76.
