Greenwich Advances To Class LL Football Final

The Greenwich High School Cardinals are headed back to the state championship in football.

GREENWICH, CT — The Greenwich High School Cardinals are heading back to the football state championship.

The No. 3 seeded Cardinals rolled over the No. 2 seeded Fairfield Prep Jesuits 31-10 on Monday night at a freezing Rafferty Stadium in the CIAC Class LL semifinals.

Greenwich took a 17-3 lead into halftime and never looked back. The Cardinals were led by senior Hector Lopez, who notched two second-half touchdowns to lock down the victory.

Other touchdown scorers for Greenwich included Jack Kelly, who ran for a score in the first quarter, and Hudson Squires, who caught a pass from quarterback Phil Tarantino.

Greenwich will now face No. 4 ranked Southington in the Class LL final set for Saturday, Dec. 13, at 7 p.m. from Veterans Stadium in New Britain.

Southington's championship game appearance marks a stunning turnaround in a season that once had them at 2-3 following a blowout loss to New Britain High School on Oct. 10.

Since then, however, SHS hasn't lost a game and now stands at 9-3, including two postseason wins.
