Greenwich Police say they “have a significant break in” solving a “number of burglaries in the mid- and backcountry areas of town.

“A suspect has been identified,” said police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray.

Police Chief James Heavey said Thursday, “We’ve been working with the feds for a while.”

Because of interstate jurisdictions and that the investigation involves burglaries in other states, “If there is an arrest, they probably will be prosecuted in the federal system. There is some overlapping of jurisdiction and because it’s across states, we are looking at a grouping of the cases,” Gray said.

He declined to elaborate further and referred questions to federal authorities.

Gray also dispelled public perception that there is an increase in burglaries in Greenwich.

“There have always been commercial burglaries, residential burglaries and larcenies from motor vehicles. There are spikes and trends,” Gray said.

While there has been a spate of burglaries in November, Gray said, “The numbers show the trend is down.”

During the first 11 months of 2015, there have been a total of 42 burglaries reported. During the same time periods for 2014 and 2013, there were 54 and 56 burglaries, respectively, according to Gray.

Gray also said, the Greenwich Police “clearance rate of burglaries is more than triple the national average. The national average is 11.4 percent. Greenwich’s clearance rate is 35 percent.”

He added, “The more burglaries you do, the more clues you leave behind. By making an arrest of a single, prolific burglar can make a big impact on burglary clearances.”
