One Of Guilford's Oldest Homes Hits The Market

The house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, according to the listing on Zillow.

GILFORD, CT — Located at 575 Leetes Island Road sits one of Guilford's oldest homes — the Pelatiah Leete House — which recently hit the market for $975,000.

According to the listing on Zillow, the house, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, has two bedrooms, two bathrooms and is over 3,100 square feet.

"Perched atop a gentle rise overlooking Shell Beach lagoon across the road, and Long Island Sound in the distance, is the Pelatiah Leete House, one of Guilford's oldest and most completely preserved 18th century dwelling houses," the listing on Zillow says. "The Pelatiah Leete House offers a unique marriage of early American architectural splendor with modern interior conveniences, and extensive exterior plantings and garden rooms, to provide both privacy and pleasure to its new owners for many years yet to come."

The Guilford Preservation Alliance notes that in 1661, Guilford granted the land now known as Leete's Island to William Leete, who later become the governor of Connecticut.

In 1766, Pelatiah Leete III had the house built across the road from the family's other houses.

"Here in 1781 his brother Simeon died from wounds received in the previous day’s skirmish with invading British troops. The house remained in the Leete family until 1929," the Alliance says on its website.
