7 Displaced After 2-Alarm Fire In Hamden

HAMDEN, CT — Seven people were displaced from their home after a two-alarm fire at an apartment complex Tuesday night in Hamden, according to officials.

Firefighters responded around 8:55 p.m. to a reported structure fire in the 200 block of Park Road. Arriving units found heavy fire from the second-floor window in the middle of an apartment complex, according to officials.

“Immediate search and rescue was initiated due to the high occupancy concerns while engine companies performed an aggressive interior coordinated fire attack,” officials wrote in a news release. “Crews encountered high heat, heavy smoke, and fire conditions. The assignment was upgraded to a second alarm due to the conditions present along with the concerns of multiple exposures and occupants. HFD crews assisted all occupants out of the structure safely with no injuries to civilians or firefighters. With quick response times, coordinated fire attack we were able to confine the fire to the apartment of origin.

“Mutual aid fire departments from neighboring towns (New Haven, and North Haven) provided station coverage while Hamden companies battled the two-alarm blaze. American Medical Response (AMR) provided EMS standby on scene. The Hamden Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Hamden Community Services and the American Red Cross provided assistance to the homeowners as well as to the firefighters operating under challenging conditions.”

Seven occupants were displaced due to smoke and fire damage.

“The Hamden Fire Marshal’s Division is actively investigating the origin and cause of this fire,” officials wrote. “They have identified a potential overloaded extension cord and want to remind residents to adhere to all manufacturers’ recommendations when utilizing these devices.”
