Kitten Stuck In Undercarriage Of Car Rescued By Hamden Firefighters
Crews responded to a 911 caller reporting he found a "surprise hitchhiker" after returning from the store, according to officials.
HAMDEN, CT — Firefighters rescued a kitten that was stuck under a car Thursday afternoon in Hamden.
Crews responded around 4:20 p.m. on July 24 to assist a 911 caller who reported he found a "surprise hitchhiker" after returning from the store, according to officials. He said when he got out of his car, he heard meowing coming from underneath and saw a kitten stuck in the undercarriage, according to officials.
“The members of Squad 1 determined that the rear of the car would have to be lifted to attempt to remove the kitten, officials wrote in a post on the Hamden Fire Department’s Facebook page. “They formulated a plan to utilize high-pressure lifting bags under the trunk area with step chocks in front of the rear tires to capture the load and stabilize the car. Firefighters Healy and Cabral worked skillfully and efficiently to build the system and achieve the lift. They then worked to remove the kitten gently and safely. The caller loaned Squad 1 a small kennel to house the kitten while Hamden Animal Control was requested. The firefighters and the caller named the kitten ‘Ryder’ to commemorate his unplanned journey.
