As a child, Michael became well known and loved for what his family affectionately called his "piano teeth smile." Though it may have looked a bit less piano like over the years, his smile remained constant and contagious.
Even through the hardest of times for himself or others, that smile could always brighten a dark room. Bitten by the theatre bug in middle school, Michael worked as a professional actor, and held a variety of other theatre jobs, locally and in major theatrical cities, including New York and Chicago. Michael then turned his long-standing love of renovation into a career.

What started as renovations in his own apartment and that of his friends, turned into a career of interior design. Most recently, Michael designed and curated the interior of The Museum of Nostalgia in Astoria, infusing his never-ending joy and playfulness.
Most recently, Michael worked sharing his wisdom and expertise in astrology, Human Design and pranic healing to his spiritual community.
It is not lost on anyone who knew him; Michael was truly a special soul. That rang even truer in his final days, when Michael's many circles of friends and family came together, some meeting for the first time and others reconnecting after many years apart. He was surrounded by loved ones who, though devastated, rallied around him and supported each other; a true testament to his ability to bring people together in love and hope.
Michael is survived and will be greatly missed by his father Joseph Mattie, brother Joseph Mattie Jr., sister-in-law Kerry Mattie, and nieces Saoirse and Victoria Mattie. He is also survived by countless aunts, uncles, cousins and an amazing collection of friends, some dating back 40+ years; a true testament to a life well-loved and well-lived.
