Press release
HAMDEN – Quinnipiac University’s School of Nursing recently participated in this year’s Hamden Back to School Carnival, offering essential hands-on training in emergency response to children and families in the community.
Led by Pina Violano, clinical associate professor of nursing and director of community engagement, a group of seven nursing students participated in the event from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Town Center Park. All of the students are enrolled in the School of Nursing’s Community Engagement MicroCredential Distinction Program, which emphasizes service learning and public health education.
“The Quinnipiac School of Nursing community engagement program continuously strives to teach these basic but effective life-saving skills,” Violano said. “Through classes and demonstrations, we are able to interact with the community and build strong bonds.”
During the event, the team taught attendees how to “Stop the Bleed” by applying a tourniquet, how to administer Narcan in the event of an opioid overdose, and how to use an EpiPen for severe allergic reactions. In addition to community education, the Quinnipiac team also provided refresher training for members of the Hamden Police Department.
