The health of your mouth impacts the health of your body and vice versa! The bacteria in your mouth can cause both problems in your mouth as well as overall health issues. And, your health problems can lead to problems with your teeth and gums. So, it is important for you to take control of your oral health and if you have children, you need to take extra care of their oral health too.

From baby teeth to taking on tooth decay or even dentures – you need to take care of your teeth every step of the way. Consider these simple 3 ACTION steps:

1) Get to the Dentist BEFORE it Hurts - It's important to have a dental professional examine and clean your teeth at least once a year. And if you have HUSKY Health or Covered CT benefits, there is no cost.

ACTION: If you are a HUSKY Health or Covered CT member, and don’t have a dentist yet – try our online search tools at: Find a Dentist - HUSKY Dental (ctdhp.org), or call our Member Service line 855-CT-DENTAL 855-283-3682 Monday -Friday, 8am-5pm. Translation services are available. Hearing impaired members, please dial 711 for Relay Connecticut assistance.

2) Have children? They should have their first visit by age 1 or when their first tooth comes in and they should see the dentist at least twice a year. Their dentist will help their baby teeth and their adult teeth stay healthy, in addition to cleaning their teeth, your child’s dentist or hygienist may apply sealants to protect those pearly whites. And your dentist, hygienist or even your pediatrician may apply fluoride varnish to strengthen their teeth.

ACTION: In addition to scheduling your children’s dental appointments this year and making sure they get there, the whole family can get great advice about brushing and flossing and eating “tooth” healthy snacks by calling Dr. Tooth Fairy! Dr. Tooth Fairy is waiting for your call 24/7 at: 833-88-FAIRY (833-883-2479).

3) Daily Self Care – your daily oral hygiene really makes a difference in giving your teeth the best chance for a long, healthy life.

ACTION: Brush your teeth at least twice a day or as instructed by your dental provider. Be sure to brush for at least 2 minutes each time, using fluoride toothpaste. Floss your teeth at least once a day or as instructed by your dental provider. Rinse your mouth after each meal or snack or as instructed. And, avoid foods and drinks high in sugar like soda (even if it’s sugar free), candy, or gum. Check in with Dr. Tooth Fairy for some good advice here, with tips available in: English, Spanish (Español), Polish język polski, Portuguese língua portuguesa, and Arabic عرب.
