Walgreens Sets Closing Date For Location In Hamden
Officials have announced the closing date for a Walgreens in Hamden.

HAMDEN, CT — A Walgreens location will close in Hamden next month, according to officials.
Company officials confirmed Tuesday that the Walgreens located at 1191 Dixwell Ave. in Hamden is set to close on Sept. 9.
“We will continue to execute our previously announced turnaround plan aimed at stabilizing the retail pharmacy, including our footprint optimization program,” the company said in a statement. “Increased regulatory and reimbursement pressures are weighing on our ability to cover the costs associated with rent, staffing, and supply needs. It is never an easy decision to close a store, and we know how important they are to the communities we serve and therefore do everything possible to improve their performance. When closures are necessary, we will work in partnership with community stakeholders to minimize customer disruptions.”

Patients who get their prescriptions at the Dixwell Avenue location won’t need to take action, according to a company spokesperson.
The spokesperson said patients will be notified by mail and their prescriptions will be automatically transferred to the Walgreens located at 1697 Whitney Ave. in Hamden.

“Patients are also eligible to receive free 90-day delivery to help ease in this transition,” the spokesperson said. “We encourage them to speak to their pharmacists to learn how to set this service up.”
The Hamden closure is part of the company’s “store optimization strategy” announced by CEO Tim Wentworth in October 2024 that included the closing of 1200 Walgreens locations across the country.
