Iconic Pizzeria To Open Foxwoods Location As Another Restaurant Closes

MASHANTUCKET, CT — Sally's Apizza will open a "flagship location" at Foxwoods Resort Casino at the California Pizza Kitchen spot in the Great Cedar Concourse, which will close Jan. 4, according to a statement from the casino.

The celebrated New Haven pizzeria was founded on Wooster Street in 1938. The Foxwoods restaurant will feature an open-concept kitchen along with Sally’s coal-fired ovens.

The space will seat about 200 people in a modern setting "that blends industrial elegance with vintage touches inspired by the original Wooster Street location," according to the statement.

Sally's will be opening "soon" at Foxwoods, though no specific date has been set.

The news comes as Sally's has expanded markedly in recent years. In October, the brand announced it would add restaurants in Danbury and Norwalk as well.

Sally's rivalry with fellow acclaimed New Haven pizzeria Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana will move to a new battleground when the brand opens its Foxwoods restaurant.

Pepe's operates a restaurant at the nearby Mohegan Sun casino and resort in Uncasville.

Sally's originated nearly a century ago and has become one of the most beloved and famous pizzerias in all of Connecticut.

In addition to its famed New Haven location, Sally's currently operates restaurants in Stamford, Fairfield, Wethersfield and Farmington, as well as Woburn and Dorchester, Mass.

The pizzeria's website teases a number of new locations "coming soon," including Norwalk, Newington and South Windsor, as well as two more Massachusetts restaurants.

Sally's at Foxwoods will replace California Pizza Kitchen, a longtime presence at the casino serving up "fresh, innovative hand-tossed artisan pizza with seasonal ingredients, salads and pasta, creative entrées, vegetarian and gluten-free options, and a full bar featuring hand-crafted cocktails," according to the Foxwoods website.
