Obituary: John M. Martin, 70, of Gales Ferry

John was a US Navy veteran, serving as Chief Torpedoman aboard the USS Skipjack and the USS Grant.

John M. Martin, 70, of Gales Ferry, husband of 51 years to Linda (Reppert) Martin, died Wednesday, November 2, 2016 at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital.

Born in Berlin, NH, he was the son of the late John and Theresa (O’Donnell) Martin, and lived in Gales Ferry for many years.

Prior to graduating from Scranton Central High School, he attained the honor of Eagle Scout. John attended Delaware Valley College and the University of New Haven, eventually earning a Masters degree in special education from Southern Connecticut State University.

He was a US Navy veteran, serving as Chief Torpedoman aboard the USS Skipjack and the USS Grant. After his military service, he was a special education teacher in the Groton Public School System.

In addition to his wife, he leaves behind two daughters, Kristine T. Craig, and her husband William, of Griswold, and Pamela K. Schroeder, and her husband Scott, of Mystic, as well as two grandsons, Alexander and Ethan Schroeder. He is also survived by his sister Michele Waering, of Glasgow, Scotland.

John was an avid reader, Civil War buff and Red Sox, Patriots and Bruins fan.
